HeartSafe

In order to increase the preparedness of our community, MIT Emergency Management collaborates with MIT EMS to offer trainings to individuals and departments in how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and apply First Aid. In fact, MIT is “HeartSafe Campus”, meaning we encourage and promote community awareness of the potential for saving the lives of sudden cardiac arrest victims through the use CPR and increased public access to defibrillation. MIT EMS’s HeartSafe Officers are dedicated to improving overall knowledge of CPR and AED usage skills and promoting all interests regarding cardiac health and stroke awareness on- and off-campus.

We hold regularly schedule CPR classes across campus which you can sign-up for here. You must be logged in with an MIT Kerberos to see the courses on this calendar.

For details to the certifying class types that we offer.

1. AHA certifying CPR/AED/First Aid class, which is one 2-hour session and costs $60
per person
. Using official American Heart Association material, this class covers CPR,
AED usage, and first aid. You will be required to complete and submit an asynchronous
learning module
before the date of the class, which takes at least 2 hours. After the
class, you will be emailed a link to claim an AHA eCard, which can be used to verify you
are CPR and first aid certified. More information about the class can be found on the
AHA website.

2. AHA certifying CPR/AED class, which is one 2-hour session and costs $50 per
person
. Using official AHA material, this class covers CPR, rescue breathing, and AED
usage. After the class, you will be emailed a link to claim an AHA eCard, which can be

Note: For AHA certifying classes, we cap the number of participants per class at 12. If you would like to certify more than 12 participants, we will need to schedule multiple classes. Please note, for groups larger than 6, the class will likely take 2.5 hours.
